Interview with SUSAN CASEY, author of THE DEVIL'S TEETH:A TRUE STORY OF OBESSION AND SURVIVAL AMOUNG AMERICA'S GREAT WHITE SHARKS
I received a copy of Casey's book and within the first few pages she held me captivated with stories of Great White Sharks and a mysterious island twenty miles off the coast of San Francisco called the Farallones. Casey shared stories of her harrowing experience with The Devil's Teeth.
In Susan Casey's new book, The Devil's Teeth: A True Story of Obsession and Survival Among America's Great White Sharks, the Time Inc. development editor chronicles her growing obsession with the great white sharks who swim amidst a set of islands called the Farallones just offshore and within the city limits of San Francisco.
In 1998, while at home, bleary with mononucleosis, Casey clicked on the television and found herself riveted by a BBC documentary and the sight of two men in a tiny boat encircled by great white sharks the size of minibuses. Casey received a highly coveted one-day permit to visit the Islands and interview two biologists who were studying the Farallon great whites. She soon found herself face-to-face with her first great white shark and was hooked, but she left without having seen an attack (the great white feed on the seals that live on the islands.) After that, she vowed to return again, this time for longer. In the fall of 2003, her dream and adventure became a nightmare when she attempted to live aboard a boat, anchored just offshore the Farallones.
