UCLA Live and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Celebrate Mozart's 250th Birthday with a Festival of His Works in 2006-2007

LOS ANGELES-UCLA Live is celebrating the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth with one of America's finest chamber orchestras, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) under the direction of Jeffrey Kahane, as they perform all 23 of Mozart's original piano concertos during the 2005-2007 seasons. This season features nine concertos in three performances taking place at 7 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 22; Sunday, March 12; and Sunday, May 21 at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. In addition, Musaic, a chamber music weekend-long festival takes place May 6-7 and a Sunday Family Event featuring chamber music fun for the whole family takes place on May 7. For tickets visit www.UCLALive.org, call 310-825-2101, or contact Ticketmaster.

LACO is the first American orchestra to perform Mozart's entire piano concerto repertoire with Kahane conducting from the keyboard, as Mozart originally intended. The first UCLA Live program on Jan. 22 features Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 5; Piano Concerto No. 9; and Piano Concerto No. 17. The second concert on March 12 features Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 11; Piano Concerto No. 23; Piano Concerto No. 6; and Piano Concerto No. 21. The third concert on May 21 features Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 15; Piano Concerto No. 22; and a world premiere composition by Uri Caine titled, Concerto for Two Pianos and Chamber Orchestra. The Mozart Festival continues into the 2006-2007 season with the additional 14 compositions.

"These concertos, taken together, constitute one of the most important, moving, inspiring and thought-provoking bodies of work in the literature of Western classical music," states Kahane. "This is the music that plumbs the depths and scales the heights of human experience, from giddy humor to ecstatic romance, from deepest anguish to serene transcendence. I know that my colleagues are as thrilled as I am at the prospect of providing what is undoubtedly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for music lovers in Los Angeles: the chance to hear all these magnificent works over the space of a little more than a year."

Also as part of UCLA Live's season, Musaic, a Chamber Music Marathon co-presented with LACO takes place Saturday-Sunday, May 6-7 at Royce Hall from 1-11 p.m. International stars will join up-and-coming guest artists and the 40 virtuosos of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in a weekend-long festival of chamber music.

Sunday Family Event also takes place on Sunday, May 7 at 11 a.m. featuring the LACO musicians, Jeffrey Kahane, baritone Jubilant Sykes and guitarist Christopher Parkening in a special program of chamber music geared towards children and their families. Supported by Warner and Carol Henry, January 22; Brigitta B. Troy, March 12;
Barbara and David Abell and the E. Nakamichi Foundation, May 21.
